When I came to UCLA, I designed space through volume and massing. I started with a big idea, and slowly began working my way through a design process of articulating mass. That way of designing has since been stripped away. Now, I start with surface. As surface is articulated, space is defined positively instead of negatively. But, space is rarely considered. It is an artifact of my design thinking. The two big projects, FIZZLE and Madrid, each work surface at differing scales. FIZZLE is about touch. Longing to touch. The desire to be touched. Doubt. Fear. What will be the effect of a touch? Madrid is about speed. How can surfaces be lubricated to enhance speed? Stretching needs to occur. Piercing may be required. Whatever the technique, surface is enhanced through speed. I thought the piece designed for the LACE windows needed to address an idea of layers of speed. I am not sure how well it did though. <continued> |
