552 Merrill Street; Indianapolis, Indiana 46203-1724

The Merrill Street Residence is a renovation of an eighty year old housing structure in downtown Indianapolis. The structure is situated on a triangular lot with northern views of the central skyline.
The renovation introduces an organism infecting the original structure adjusting it to the idealistic conditions of the clients. As the clients familiarize themselves with the organism the organism adapts to the clients. Therefore, throughout the design process the organism continues to grow creating new living spaces and aesthetics while becoming a reflection of the clients’ aspirations. Woven within the fabric of the resulting spaces is the residue of the original structure. The separation between new and old is apparent but not distracting. While experiencing the renovation, the user will gain an understanding of the dichotomy between organism and host through realization of the controls of the original. Thus, a visualization of the architectural process connects environment and user. When the understanding of the impact each has on the other is discerned, the structure and clients will communicate and evolve laterally.
